Save CU-Mansfield's Music Program
The Issue
“Mansfield Means Music”—a motto that has defined Commonwealth University–Mansfield (CU-Mansfield) for generations. But now, the music department itself is under attack. Proposed retrenchments—layoffs, program cuts, and funding reductions—will severely destabilize the department, leading to loss of accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and rendering it non-compliant with Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) standards. If these proposed cuts become reality, CU-Mansfield will no longer meet the requirements to recommend its graduates for Pennsylvania K-12 music certification, effectively eliminating the pathway for future music educators in our state. In addition, loss of accreditation will also severely limit current and future students ability to pursue graduate level study in all areas of music.
Despite the uncertainty, current students and faculty have continued to maintain top-quality music ensembles and deliver inspiring performances, a testament to their dedication and the program’s resilience. This is no time to abandon their efforts. We must make our voices heard so that they—and generations after them—can learn, grow, and thrive under the direction of world-class faculty in a fully funded program.
This is not just an academic crisis—it is an existential threat to the department’s future, the students it serves, and the communities that rely on its graduates. CU-Mansfield’s music program has championed accessible arts education for decades, providing opportunities for students from all backgrounds to pursue their passion for music. The proposed cuts will silence this legacy, leaving a void that cannot be easily filled.
We, the undersigned, demand that Commonwealth University and PASSHE immediately halt all retrenchments in the music department at CU-Mansfield. Failure to act will irreparably harm students, educators, and the cultural fabric of our communities. Join us in demanding accountability and protecting this vital program.
