The Issue

Although Planning permission has been granted for a McDonald's drive-thru and restaurant, it can hopefully still be stopped on the vast environmental issues this will create to our area.

Crediton is at the moment one of a very few Market Towns still with a vast amount of Independent traders left in Great Britain.  We the undersigned want to keep Crediton as such, and not transform into just another town, that could be anywhere in the country, with just chain stores, and empty premises, like so many in this country.

A McDonalds would create unfair competition to many independent Cafe's, Restaurants, Takeaways, pubs, and a burger van situated just beyond where McDonalds will be built.  Most of these independent traders use local suppliers situated within Crediton, such as Four Seasons Grocers, Cox Butchers, The Green House Grocers, Stevie B's Bakery, Oliver's Bakery, and those close to the area, such as, MC Kelly, Chinns Sausages, Thornes Farm Shop, Exe Valley Farm Shop, Sandford Orchards Cider etc..  Man y of these could be forced out of business, leaving many locals without full and part time contracted jobs, many at a higher rate than the minimum wage.

The areas environment will also suffer greatly.  A drive-thru will have idling cars causing more pollution in an already higher than average pollution area, due to already having a roundabout serving, Tesco store, Tesco Petrol Station, Red Deer Public House, Mole Valley Store, Redlands Surgery, Bus Route to Crediton Railway Station, The new housing estate, The Industrial estate, and is of course the main and only trunk serving North Devon to Exeter and return for local commuters.  So a McDonalds here will increase the amount of traffic, causing more congestion, meaning more pollution, and more damage to our already fragile infrastructure.  Add onto this 40 foot trailers and their wagons using either the A377, or A3072 for deliveries, meaning these will cause more congestion, meaning more pollution and more damage along these routes.

We are also concerned about run off and litter from this establishment polluting The River Yeo situated just behind, where it is planned to be built.  Litter is also a huge concern for the residents, especially those already in that area, and for future residents when the housing numbers increase here.  The increase in litter will also have a detrimental effect on our local wildlife in  this area.

Increase in noise, and the possibility of increase in anti-social behaviour, as drug users are known to use an area just along from here at Crediton Railway Station.

Light pollution will increase, especially as this will be a 24 hour establishment.

2023 saw the first increase in temperatures above and beyond 1.5 degrees, McDonalds are known to use cattle, and soya from The Amazon, where trees are being cut down, and not replaced in huge numbers every day, how may more McDonalds are to built, thus meaning more trees falling victim, and pushing our climate crisis deeper, and quicker?

McDonalds are also known to be using chicken products from a company called Cargills.  This companies factories have made many rivers in The USA bereft of any life.  Their UK Factory near The River Why, has also made stretches along there bereft of life.  We the undersigned want Crediton to have no part of this, we must preserve our ecological system in the UK, and not kill our rivers, and our wildlife.

We the undersigned believe enough is enough, and we must stand up to big business, and stand up to them NOW, before it is far tool late to save our countryside, our wildlife, and this countries already fragile ecological system.

We the undersigned urge MDDC to keep Crediton as a unique Independent Market Town, keeping is culture and heritage as such, and refuse the opening of an establishment which will have only a detrimental effect on our Town, our health, and our wildlife.
