The Convoy District needs your help.
Right now, Time Warner Cable (TWC) is proposing to demolish an existing commercial building on 4020 Convoy Street, and construct a 6,600 square foot cable hub facility, DC power room, electrical room, and a new generator yard. This industrial facility, which is roughly the size of three suburban homes, would be located on Convoy District's busiest commercial corridor. Time Warner is currently seeking permit approval from the San Diego Planning Commission to build this project (see details here).
The Convoy District Partnership, a grassroots non-profit organization advocating for the interests of patrons and business owners in San Diego’s Convoy District area, opposes the TWC proposal for the following main reasons:
1) The design is not compatible to nor enhances the character of the community;
2) The project is not pedestrian-friendly and further divides Convoy’s north-south commercial areas;
3) The use lacks gathering space and does not promote human activity on a bustling corridor.
This proposal, if approved by the San Diego Planning Commission, would be a setback for the transformation of the Convoy District into a vibrant cultural and dining hub for all San Diegans. It does not meet the character and vision of the community, nor follow in the footsteps of community-friendly development projects found in other business districts such as Little Italy and Hillcrest.
If the Convoy District is to ever transform into a bustling mixed-use, visually-appealing, pedestrian friendly area for visitors and residents, we need to take a stand for community-friendly development. This is that stand. Join us.
Time is of the essence - the permit approval hearing for this project is scheduled for April 14th! Help us reach 2,000 petition signatures by April 14th!
