Save CNR #803 from the scrap yard

The Issue

The town of Carbonear has plans to scrap Newfoundland's last surviving G8 800hp Diesel locomotive on the Island.    CNR #803 was built in June 1956 for Canadian National Railway, for use in Newfoundland on the island's Railway branchlines.  Namely the Bonavista branchline, Carbonear branchline and the Argentia branchlines.

803 has seen service in Newfoundland since it was built, and has served the island honorably until she was retired in 1986.   803 was then stripped of her motive power and fuel tanks, then 803 took her last trip to Carbonear on board a transport truck in the very early 1990's.

803 has sat near the Railway museum in Carbonear ever since then.   Over the years 803 had been given some attention with random coats of new paint, but over the last 10 years or so 803 has sat completely abandoned and neglected.

803 deserves better then be left neglected and forgotten, let alone having her scrapped!     The town states 803 is a safety hazard to the community, and that it would take upwards to $100,000.00 to restore 803 to her former glory and that it would be to much of a burden on the town to put such money in to 803.

There are ALWAYS other ways to raise funds to put towards such a historic piece of Newfoundland history!

803 is a landmark in the community, she would leave a scar on the town if 803 is destroyed.    If 803 is scrapped, what is to stop the town from tearing up what is left of the original rail yard in Carbonear?

The time to act is now!

Help us save 803 from the scrap heap, please sign this petition right now and place your mark on the continuing history of Newfoundland's last remaining EMD G8 locomotive #803!
