With voting in the council elections now open Save Chamberlain Park (SCP) surveyed both front runners for mayor – Phil Goff and John Tamihere – as to their respective views on the future of this recreational facility that has been a public golf course for 80 years. Whilst the outcome of the local board elections will have a bearing on the future of the park, the mayor will also play a pivotal role as well.

What is at stake for Aucklanders is the expenditure of $30m of rate payer money that it can’t afford on a project that will have significant implications for the environment due to tree loss at a time when we are in an Climate Emergency.

The question asked of both candidates was: City Vision candidates Peter Haynes and Cathy Casey have stated they will reduce Chamberlain Park to a 9-hole golf course as part of masterplan that has been tabled to Council.  Do you support them in their plan for Chamberlain Park.

Here is what Phil Goff said:

"I uphold the right of the local board representing the local community to determine the configuration of Chamberlain Park."

SCP COMMENTS - IF CITY VISION RETAIN CONTROL OF THE ALBERT EDEN LOCAL BOARD CHAMBERLAIN PARK WILL BE REDEVELOPED AND REPURPOSED

Here is what John Tamihere said:

“I do not support City Vision or the breaking up of Chamberlain Park, period.I have been vociferous in my opposition to the carve up of Chamberlain Park.”

SCP COMMENTS – WHATEVER THE OUTCOME OF THE LOCAL BOARD ELECTIONS JOHN TAMIHERE SUPPORTS SAVING CHAMBERLAIN PARK.
