Save Chamberlain Park Incorporated

Our campaign to stop the Albert Eden Local Board’s senseless $30m rate payer funded carve up of Chamberlain Park heads to the High Court next month - a two day Judicial Review hearing is set down for the 13th and 14th of November. Our Judicial Review challenges the legal process under which decision making power over a regional asset like Chamberlain Park was able to be given to a Local Board. We are also challenging the decision making and consultation process that the Local Board engaged in when it went about making its decisions to create and then adopt its Masterplan. We believe what they have done is a bit like holding a flag referendum without putting the existing NZ flag on the list – and justifying that state of affairs by saying, well there is a case for change, so the existing flag must go! Chamberlain Park is one of the highest utilised golf courses in Auckland with well over 50,000 rounds played a year. People from all over Auckland Play golf at Chamberlain Park, and the course is loved by many as the club of the “working class”. It is one of only two true public access golf courses in the Auckland region. If the Master plan proceeds, half of Chamberlain Park will be levelled and replaced with artificial turfs and will need lots of parking spaces. There will be a significant number of trees removed in the process, negatively affecting bird life and their habitat.
