Save Chain Pond Kevin's Home
The Issue
Chain Pond is an historic pond that is famous with many generations of people that live in and around Meadvale . It was first recorded around 1850 and searching through old maps and listening to people who remember it through stories of their grandparents it was first used as a watering hole for horses that had spent the day grazing on Earlswood Common .
In the wars it was used by the Canadians as a truck wash . I have spent a lot of time researching this pond and on historic maps it shows that there were originally two streams that fed Chain Pond , one on the left that allowed land water run off , the other from a Pond higher up , this pond was fed by a natural spring we believe and land run off .
This system always worked and kept Chain Pond healthy and rich. Houses we built inbetween the two ponds and we think the stream to the left was filled in and a pipe linking the two ponds laid in the remaining stream so water could continue to flow to Chain Pond .
Sadly now the inlet appears to be blocked and I noticed three years ago that the water level was dropping . Despite a previous petition and endless emails asking Reigate & Banstead to unblock the inlet , desilt the pond , and check the clay liner for cracks they have refused to do the work and it has resulted in Chain Pond now completely drying out .
As a means to escape the attention Chain Pond was getting and people clearly concerned about the welfare of the Wildlife and the Pond itself Reigate and Banstead downgraded the Pond to seasonal and are now telling people that in hot summers it has always been prone to drying up .
WHY THIS POND MATTERS
Kevin our resident Moorhen has resided in Chain Pond for many years , it's his home and along with his partner has raised many chicks there . People have become so attached to Kevin and as concern grew for their welfare through lack of water people as a community responded by putting pools of water on the rock hard pond floor . Reigate and Banstead were not happy with this and removed all water vessels .
It's time Kevin's home was treated with the respect it deserves there
for this petition is to demand that Reigate and Banstead restore Chain Pond to the rich historic pond that it always was until lack of care and neglect by the council caused the complete collapse of this amazing ecosystem , in it's current state all life that resided there has been lost , but Kevin bless him still remains hoping we will help him
