St. Lucie West Centennial High School’s drama program is at risk of being shuttered. Administration is suggesting that students apply to other schools if they wish to continue theater. Assuming this is in light of the current instructor leaving, they’d rather promote upheaval than find a new educator to fill. 

Maybe this is because administrators don’t have complete perspective to the power of arts like drama. They lack the understanding of art programs and the impact they have on our communities. It’s not a priority when other programs bring in more capital. 

High school is hard, weird, and defining. Without high school extracurriculars and arts, life long friendships would’ve never formed, careers would've laid stale, and creativity would’ve never prospered.

Whether you yourself had personal experience with high school theater, SLWCHS theater, or not, administration needs to be reminded that arts shouldn’t be optional. Not only do the arts sustain community, but they have the power to truly save lives.
