The Issue

Catford Mews has long served as a cornerstone of our neighbourhood. This family-friendly gathering space has provided much more than entertainment; it is a place where bonds are formed, friendships flourish, and community spirit thrives. The potential closure of Catford Mews threatens the very fabric of our community. It's not just about the loss of a popular cinema, it's about robbing our community of a space where they are welcome to socialise, unwind, and feel safe.

Over the years, Catford Mews has also served as an employment hub, supporting local jobs and pumping life back into our local economy. The loss of this establishment will not only impact its dedicated staff but also lead to a ripple effect that infringes on the financial stability of our community. Given the challenging times we live in, the significance of a local employer cannot be underestimated.

We implore the relevant stakeholders to take into account the lasting positive impact that Catford Mews has on our community when making a decision about its future. This cherished gathering place is integral to preserving the social and economic stability of our community.

Let's unite our voices to protect an asset that represents the heart of our community. Let's Save Catford Mews. Please, contribute your signature to this urgent plea, help us safeguard our beloved venue and the spirit of community it upholds.

The Decision Makers

Lewisham Council
Catford’s cinema returns this summer Thank you for supporting our effort to bring a cinema and community hub back to Catford. We are delighted to share some very good news about the new operator and opening plans: After a detailed process to find the right partner, The Castle Cinema has been chosen as the new operator of the former Catford Mews. The Castle Cinema is an independent, crowd‑funded operator known for friendly, community‑focused venues across London. Trading as The Castle Catford, they will provide: • a mix of independent, cultural and mainstream films • a welcoming bar and café space • dedicated community areas for local groups and activities • continued management of the foyer as a café and food‑court, supporting local food start‑ups Residents told us clearly that bringing back the cinema mattered. This announcement shows confidence growing in Catford’s town centre with the recent opening of The Catford House and Goldsmiths, University of London opening a new campus in the town centre. Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres OBE, said: “I want to thank the local community for their patience while we worked to ensure the best operator was selected, one that we know will contribute to the success of Catford Town Centre, and a place that welcomes everyone. I extend a very warm welcome to The Castle Cinema, we cannot wait to see them open their doors.” If you would like to stay involved and be the first to know updates about the opening, you can sign up at www.castlecatford.com.
