Save Carter G. Woodson Building

Save Carter G. Woodson Building

The Issue

We are writing to urge your support in preserving and repurposing the historic Carter G. Woodson Elementary School in the heart of Jacksonville’s 32209 community. As you know, this institution has served as a beacon of education and cultural significance since 1966, fostering generations of learners before its closure in 2020.

Magnolia Gardens Community Development Corporation (CDC), in partnership with My Village Project and several community organizations, envisions transforming this landmark into a thriving community center that addresses critical local needs. By transferring ownership of the facility from the Duval County School Board to the City of Jacksonville, we can establish a multi-purpose resource hub that offers early childhood and adult education programs, workforce development, health and wellness services, recreational spaces, and services for elderly residents.

Notably, the 32209 area lacks a community center within a 15-minute walking distance, leaving a significant gap in accessible resources for residents. Rather than allowing this historic site to be demolished, we have the opportunity to reinvest in our community, preserve our shared history, and create a sustainable future for all.

Why This Matters:

Historical & Cultural Significance: Named after Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the "Father of Black History," this school represents his legacy of education, empowerment, and historical preservation.
Community Identity: The school has been a cornerstone of the community, serving as a place of learning, gathering, and inspiration for decades.
Alternative Solutions Exist: Instead of demolition, the building can be repurposed into a community center, cultural institution, or educational hub that continues to serve the public.

We cannot afford to lose a building that represents so much of our shared history. Carter G. Woodson Elementary is a testament to the power of education and the legacy of a leader who fought to ensure Black history was never forgotten. We urge the community to stand together and protect this historic site before it’s too late."

We ask for your leadership and support in facilitating this transition. Please join us in advocating for the repurposing of Carter G. Woodson Elementary School to serve the needs of our community. We welcome the opportunity to discuss this initiative further and look forward to your partnership in making this vision a reality.
