The Issue

Dear Governor Newsom, Mayor Bass, California State Assembly members and California State Senate members:

Firstly, thank you for your diligent efforts to keep the film and entertainment industry here in California with the current tax incentives for television and film production.

Our state, and Hollywood specifically, holds an advantageous position.  It is where the artform was fundamentally developed, its culture defined, and our community’s talented workforce guaranteed it flourished. It is pertinent for us to utilize this concentration of talent in Hollywood.

We have signed this petition to share our consensus in requesting your help. Aggressive and significant tax incentives originating from other states within the US and abroad are stripping away our livelihoods.

California’s current and future tax incentives are vitally important, yet currently only cover post-production when the production was shot in California. We are bringing to your attention the need for a specific, stand-alone post-production incentive as well. Strong production tax incentives allow more projects to be shot in California and strong stand-alone post-production tax incentives allow for more projects to be completed in California whether they were shot in state or elsewhere...this point is critical.

From picture editing to sound editing, mixing, foley, color timing, scoring musicians, music editing, visual effects, and craft services, the art of post-production is fundamental.  It has been perfected here in California by local citizens, and we maintain that here it must stay.  Without specific stand-alone post-production tax incentives like those offered for production, California loses post-production jobs. We want them back and we want them protected.

BOTH production and post-production tax incentives are essential for California to reclaim its place as the entertainment capital of the world.

Hollywood’s work entertains and inspires people all over the world. Let’s keep post-production work here in Hollywood. When we lose the work, we lose the workers who are vibrant members of our community.  Currently, many dedicated and talented people have suffered too much for too long. We need your leadership.

We would strongly value the opportunity to help in formulating next steps for a stand-alone post-production tax incentive.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

The creative and talented people in Film and Entertainment of California, as well as the local businesses that support them.
