Save Cabbagetown Businesses

Infrastructure projects often do not meet proposed deadlines, resulting in unbearable traffic issues, inaccessible transit and drastic consequences for our local businesses.

The streetcar track replacement and hydro utility repairs happening on College and Carlton streets have diverted all TTC traffic from Cabbagetown’s main commercial hub. This project is expected to be further delayed, well into the holiday season, which is a critical time for our local businesses.

The strains on our local businesses are further compounded by the water main replacement happening along Parliament Street. The construction has resulted in the removal of a large portion of parking, further reducing access to our local businesses. The expected completion date for this project is spring 2023.

While infrastructure changes are vital to the healthy functioning of our city, the timelines for these long overdue projects is unreasonable, especially considering the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns that our businesses are still recovering from.

Cabbagetown is witnessing huge drops in traffic and shoppers. Our local businesses are reporting revenue declines as high as 70%.

The burden of these mismanaged projects must not fall onto the backs of our small business owners.

We demand that Mayor John Tory step up to address the threat of business closures in Cabbagetown. We are asking our elected officials to pledge to do the following:

  • Divert more resources to infrastructure changes and reduce timelines for completion by 50%
  • Commit to financially supporting local businesses impacted by ongoing infrastructure changes
  • Commit to meeting with local business owners and community leaders to discuss plans to support our local economy
  • Commit to transparency to their constituents by providing details about who is accountable and what has already been done to address road construction project delays

Our vendors are critical to the health and vitality of our city and culture. Help hold our elected officials accountable.
