What is happening

We have about one week to rally the community and get eleven city council members to agree to rewrite Green Village Initiative’s lease renewal agreement in a way that prohibits construction of any kind.

Fourteen Bridgeport organizations have come together to form the Bridgeport Green Space Coalition over our shared concern for the future of Reservoir Community Farm. This is a grassroots organization of groups that support the farm and is independent from Green Village Initiative and all of their staff.

On Monday March 7th the lease ends for Reservoir Community Farm, the farm headquarters of Green Village Initiative (GVI). GVI is a nonprofit whose mission is to grow food, knowledge, leadership, and community, through urban gardening and farming, to create a more just food system in Bridgeport. Reservoir Community Farm has been located behind the Terrace Housing of the Reservoir community in the same lot for ten years. 

The only option offered to the farm to continue using the property does not actually protect the farm. The current proposed lease has a "Development Rights" clause stating that a library will be built on all or part of the premises and also that the lease can be ended for any reason. Voting on this lease has been presented to some councilors as an option to support the farm even though it in fact gives it almost no protection.

The community has come out since Fall 2020 to vocally support preserving the farm in its entirety. Despite the community’s efforts, members of the city council have continued to push for the use of the land to build a library and parking lot.
We are demanding this does not happen and for GVI to have permanent residency. 

Our Demands
We demand from the Bridgeport City Council:

1. An extension to rewrite the GVI lease renewal agreement 
2. A task force to research more sustainable options for the proposed library, without paving our farm. We need an alternate location for the library.
3. A 99 year lease including a restriction for building on the land

Why we support no development
Green spaces are too rare and must be protected for climate justice, public health and education. At Reservoir Community Farm people have access to clean, affordable fresh produce and a space to support mental, physical, spiritual and community health. Considering the environmental racism and toxic pollution in Bridgeport, the lack of accessibility to equitable health care, drastic health disparities plaguing Black, Brown and poor people, and the current state of the global climate crisis, we need to preserve green spaces.

The farm is an inspiring community institution countering those forces. It is the only educational farm in Bridgeport and part of what makes our city unique. It must be protected in its entirety. Students have access to their school libraries and the five existing and two soon-to-open public libraries in Bridgeport. We are severely undermining the hands-on learning that goes on in a farm by saying we need to merge it with a library. 

How You Can Help:
1. Please sign our petition to show your support for a lease renewal that would preserve one of our last green incubation spaces in Bridgeport.  

2. Come show your support Saturday 3/5/22 at 10AM at 1469 Reservoir Ave Bridgeport CT 06606

3. Call, email and text the Bridgeport city council members urging them to write a new lease for GVI that prohibits any construction on the land before they vote 3/7/22. You can use the template below and send to all the email addresses beneath it.

I write to you today with concern for the lease renewal for Green Village Initiative's Reservoir community farm that will be voted on at the next city council meeting March 7. 

I value preserving green spaces in their entirety and Reservoir Community Farm as an asset to our city. I urge you and the Bridgeport city council to write a new lease that prohibits construction of any kind from the land. 

Please do what you can in your collective power for:

1. An extension to rewrite the GVI lease renewal agreement 

2. A task force to research more sustainable options for the proposed library, besides paving over our farm. We need an alternate location for the library.

3. A 99 year lease including a restriction for any building on the land

I value the education and hands-on learning that goes on at Green Village Initiative farm and with the climate crisis, we must preserve green spaces in their entirety. Especially ones that have been serving our community for a decade fighting food injustice and building community.

Tenemos alrededor de una semana para reunir a la comunidad y lograr que once miembros del consejo de la ciudad acepten reescribir el acuerdo de renovación de arrendamiento de Green Village Initiative de una manera que prohíba la construcción de cualquier tipo.

El lunes 7 de marzo finaliza el contrato de arrendamiento de Reservoir Community Farm, la sede de la granja de Green Village Initiative (GVI). GVI es una organización sin fines de lucro cuya misión es cultivar alimentos, conocimiento, liderazgo y comunidad, a través de la agricultura y la jardinería urbanas, para crear un sistema alimentario más justo en Bridgeport. Reservoir Community Farm ha estado ubicada detrás de Terrace Housing de la comunidad Reservoir en el mismo lote durante diez años.

La única opción que se le ofrece a la finca para continuar usando la propiedad en realidad no protege la finca. El contrato de arrendamiento propuesto actual tiene una cláusula de "Derechos de desarrollo" que establece que se construirá una biblioteca en la totalidad o parte de las instalaciones y también que el contrato de arrendamiento puede rescindirse por cualquier motivo. Estamos exigiendo que esto no suceda y que GVI tenga la residencia permanente.

Por qué no apoyamos el desarrollo

Los espacios verdes son demasiado raros y deben protegerse para la justicia climática, la salud pública y la educación. En Reservoir Community Farm, las personas tienen acceso a productos frescos limpios y asequibles y un espacio para apoyar la salud mental, física, espiritual y comunitaria. Teniendo en cuenta el racismo ambiental y la contaminación tóxica en Bridgeport, la falta de acceso a una atención médica equitativa, las drásticas disparidades de salud que afectan a la población afroamericana, hispanoamericana y de escasos recursos económico, y el estado actual de la crisis climática mundial, necesitamos preservar los espacios verdes.

La granja es una institución comunitaria inspiradora que contrarresta esas fuerzas. Es la única granja educativa en Bridgeport y parte de lo que hace que nuestra ciudad sea única. Debe ser protegido en su totalidad. Los estudiantes tienen acceso a sus bibliotecas escolares y a las cinco bibliotecas públicas existentes y dos que pronto abrirán en Bridgeport. Estamos socavando severamente el aprendizaje práctico que ocurre en una granja al decir que necesitamos fusionarlo con una biblioteca.
