Brianna, although able to come back and graduate in June, is a student with Down Syndrome who is being denied the opportunity to stay in her class and finish out her senior year at Sachem High school.  Due to a change in Connecticut law, students with disabilities are now permitted to remain in school until the age of 22 (previously, it was 21).  New York law in this area is nearly indistinguishable from Connecticut law, so the same rules are being recommended by NYSED to allow New York students to remain in school until 22.  It is up to each school district to determine when to end the school year for these students.  Sachem has decided to end the school year at the end of the semester in which a student turns 22.

Brianna will be 22 in January and Sachem is not permitting her to complete her senior year and remain in class since she turns 22 just before the first semester ends.  This is a detrimental decision for her and her family while her peers are able to complete the 2024-2025 school year simply because their birthdays occur towards the end of the year.
