Save Boroondara's Heritage Bluestone Kerb, Channels and Laneways

Council wants to remove Boroondara’s historic bluestone kerb and channels!

Council’s Draft Road Material Policy will see all our historic bluestone kerbs and channels in Boroondara reduced to one pitcher, degrading the aesthetics and heritage of our streets.

We need to take action now to stop this happening!

Council’s Draft Road Materials Policy will mean that all of our remaining original heritage bluestone kerb and channels will be lost.

YOU CAN HELP SAVE BOROONDARA’S BLUESTONE KERB AND CHANNELS

On March 14 2024, Boroondara Council introduced a Draft Road Materials Policy that will mean that where reconstruction of a road that has an existing bluestone kerb and channel is required, the bluestone kerb and channel profile will be constructed with a single kerb stone and a single pitcher channel stone.

This will mean the destruction of all of the remaining historically significant original Victorian, Edwardian and Interwar era bluestone kerb and channels within the City of Boroondara.

Boroondara’s original bluestone kerb and channels are an intrinsic part of the historic fabric that contributes to the heritage of the City of Boroondara, dating from the 1850s through to the 1930s.

Boroondara’s original bluestone kerb and channels are of historic significance because they:

· reflect early settlement patterns, showing the areas of Boroondara that developed in the period of first settlement in the 1850s through to the 1930s

· demonstrate an early method of road construction no longer in use

We need your help to try and protect it.

You can make a difference.

Please help save Boroondara’s bluestone heritage by signing the petition requesting that Boroondara Council:

1. Ensures that the reconstruction and repair of Boroondara’s historic original bluestone kerb and channels is carried out in a way that reflects as closely as possible the detail and design of their original appearance.

2. Retains the appearance and design of Boroondara’s intact bluestone gutters as they were originally constructed so as to ensure the maintenance of their cultural heritage significance to the City of Boroondara.

3. Delays a decision on its draft policy until it undertakes a heritage study of Boroondara’s bluestone laneways, bluestone kerb and channels and bluestone crossovers, to be undertaken by an expert heritage consultant.
