Downtown Miami Residents

21 Jul 2018
In only five days, our city commissioners will vote on another Ultra contract at Bayfront Park. Please help us save downtown's premier green space by attending the meeting at City Hall - July 26 at 9am.
There's one more thing that you can do to help - please send the following email to the commissioners:

Dear Commissioner [Last Name],
I’m writing to you to ask that you vote “NO” on Ultra’s contract renewal on July 26, as Ultra Music Festival is no longer an appropriate event for the high-density residential neighborhood that Downtown Miami has become.
Ultra closes Bayfront Park, our downtown’s premier green space, for over a month, with two subsequent months required to rehabilitate the extensive damage. Ultra also closes downtown’s only public playground for weeks. It generates noise levels that were measured by an acoustic engineering study and were shown to be dangerous to nearby residents’ health, and likely to cause building damage.
There are over 5,000 residents who live within a city block of Bayfront Park. Our lives are seriously disrupted by these events. Kids can’t play in the playground, dog owners can’t take their pets for a walk, we can’t get into and out of our homes for days, and our health and property is seriously compromised. Real estate sales data show that downtown home values have plummeted in the aftermath of Ultra in 2017 and again in 2018, representing a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars to Miami’s tax base and to our financial well-being.
Ultra is a world-class event that had a great run in downtown Miami during the years that downtown was a business-only district. However, times have changed, and Ultra has changed – from a one-day festival for 10,000 in 1999 to a massive three day rave for 165,000 in 2018.
Downtown has changed, too - the City of Miami decided over a decade ago to turn downtown into a thriving residential district, and allowed developers to build thousands of residential units around Bayfront Park. Since 2000, downtown population more than doubled from 40,000 to over 92,000 - including many families. According to the DDA, the number of children age 0-14 has grown 53% over the past 8 years.
As the city greatly benefitted from that development, it also meant that some events are no longer appropriate for such a high-density residential neighborhood.
The time has come to relocate Ultra to one of the many South Florida venues that were designed to host such massive events, and treat Bayfront Park as a green space for the enjoyment of all Miami residents, and as an entertainment venue – in the beautiful Klipsch Amphitheater that can accommodate up to 10,000 viewers.
Please vote “No” on Ultra’s contract renewal on July 26.
