As a volunteer coach in Banning, I have seen firsthand the invaluable role that our Parks and Recreation department plays in the lives of our community members. These centers serve as more than just places for physical activity; they are crucial hubs of social connection, personal growth, and community well-being. However, an imminent threat looms over them; closure due to alleged budgetary constraints.
Despite claims that the city's budget deficit justifies these closures, the official Grand Jury report reveals the truth: the financial crisis stems from our electric utility, not from our Parks and Recreation Department. This misallocation of blame endangers our children's safe havens and strips our seniors of the social and health benefits they depend on.
Our recreation centers are not just buildings; they are lifelines. Youth programs offer children structure, mentorship, and a refuge from negative influences. For many families, these programs are the only affordable recreational option available. Similarly, for our senior citizens, these centers provide essential services and companionship that help combat loneliness and promote active living.
Cutting these programs would be tragic not just for individuals, but for our entire community. We have a responsibility to fight for more transparent and equitable budget solutions.
