Save Arikomban, the tusker from Kerala, India
The Issue
This petition is to save the life of a male elephant called Arikomban, originally from Kerala, India. He is in serious trouble. Please sign the petition before they butcher him in the street.
His story goes like this. In 1984 people of Munnar area heard the cry of a baby elephant for ages. When they started searching, they found out his mum had an accident and died. The rest of the herd went back to forest but the babu refused to leave his mum. But in a couple of days the herd came back and brought him back to the forest. However every year the heard came back to the same spot to pay tribute to their dead family member. Over the years they stopped coming but the baby elephant who lost his mum at the age of two, never stopped coming. Every year he comes and pay tribute to his mum. Now all the locals have witnessed this and they love him.
But the problem is greedy humans are destroying their home. They are disrupting wildlife. Animals have no enough food. In search of food this poor guy destroy about 30 buildings and killed 8 people. Well this is what they say. But their is no evidence. For the past six year kerala Forest department is trying to catch him and they finally did and took him away from his homeland and from his family including two calves and his female. However he is on a mission. He is trying to go back home. He is walking towards his home direction. He walked for 18h and he is only an hour away from his family. But the forest officers are trying to distract him with crackers and guns which made him go into villages and towns. Now that he is near human settlements they are going to shoot him. He already has got shot many times and has many severe wounds in his body.
The devastated locals have requested the government many times to make a cage or a barrier to keep the elephants away from human settlement and let them live their live in their homeland. The locals are ready to feed them Arikomban in particular. But the government is not willing and instead they are helping the real estate mafia trying to get rid of wildlife life. Kerala government claims they spent about 250000 rupees to relocate him. However they haven't done anything towards protecting the wildlife corridors neither made an effort to end this battle between humans and wildlife once for all. Further to this, most of the human settlements around this area are all recent as well as illegal.
This petition is to create awareness and to help arikomban immediately from any further torture by the forest department of Kerala/Tamil Nadu. We need wider wildlife corridors where humans are strictly prohibited and let wild animals enough their lives in the wild.
