The Issue

The SS United States is a magnificent, irreplaceable piece of American History that deserves to be preserved and restored. She is an engineering marvel - a grand example of the technological prowess and superiority of the United States during the height of maritime travel. Beautifully designed with speed, strength, and safety in mind, she ferried thousands across the Atlantic in comfort, even setting the record for fastest transatlantic crossing of an ocean liner, earning her the Blue Riband which she still holds today! Because of her significance she is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Thousands came out to witness the grandeur of the SS United States as she was towed down the Delaware river. There is massive interest from the people of the United States of America, and even some in other countries, that want her to be preserved. Standing united, God willing, we can save her!

If we don’t act now and stand up and make our voices heard her current owners, the county of Okaloosa Florida, will purposefully sink her to create another artificial reef. Their plans included having her stacks, radar mast, paint, and (possibly) the bridge removed before being sunk, to be enjoyed only by divers. While plans for creating an artificial reef are commendable, there are already numerous ships in the area that were sunk for that same reason and the SS United States is too historic to be used for such a purpose.

The importance of preserving our history, especially as a rather young nation, cannot be understated. We helped save the Queen Mary, the time is now to preserve one of our own.  She is a treasure to the nation and should be declared a National Historic Landmark, protecting her from an ultimate and untimely demise! We still have time to act and keep her as living history, but time is running short.  She is a historic landmark, a beautiful glimpse into our past and an inspiration for our future. Let’s stand together and raise our voices to save our ship!

Call upon your senstors, your representatives, the White House, to work amicably with the county commisioners of Okaloosa, to create a solution that would preserve her as a National Historic Landmark. She is still a very strong and structurally sound vessel and preservation could been done in phases. This is achievable. Funding could be provided through federal and state grants, private grants, crowdfunding campaigns, volunteer and paid labor, paid tours, partnerships, corporate and private sponsorships, etc.

I believe we owe it to our future generations to work together as a nation to save this incredible piece of US history, the SS United States!
