Sebastia, an ancient site and city entwined in the history of the Roman, Byzantine and Greek empires, will be destroyed to make way for an Israeli-owned “national park”. Demarcating and excavation of the archaeological site has already started, with no regard to the wellbeing and livelihoods of locals. The Israeli occupation intends to create a Jewish-only cultural site, absent of the Palestinians who have lived here for 5,000 years. This is completely illegal under international law and a violation of a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site and would add to the more than 40,000 Palestinians displaced across the West Bank in 2025.

This is the disturbing and fast-approaching reality facing the people of Sebastia - erasure, expulsion, Israeli expansion. We cannot let destruction of valued historical sites and the livelihoods of Palestinians continue.
