Save an innocent man from North Carolina's death row

The Issue

Research on wrongful convictions in the United States estimates that they make up about 5% of the incarcerated population, more than 100,000 people. Sabur Tyler is one of them. Sabur currently faces the unimaginable fate of death row despite compelling evidence of his innocence.

For 30 years, Sabur has been on North Carolina's death row for a crime that never happened. His girlfriend was engulfed in flames while lighting a kerosene fire, a tragic accident. There was no fire investigation ever conducted, and the evidence pointed to an accident. Despite this, the prosecution put forward the story that Sabur had intentionally set his girlfriend on fire. Sabur was found guilty and sentenced to death in 1995.

Executions in North Carolina have been under moratorium since 2006. In 2025, Governor Stein signed HB307, also known as Iryna's Law. In an effort to restart executions, Iryna's Law accelerates the timeline for death penalty appeals. It also requires the state to identify alternative methods to lethal injection, including the electric chair and firing squad. Sabur could be next.

We are calling upon the Governor of North Carolina, Josh Stein, the state legislature, and the judicial system to closely examine this case again.

Join us in raising awareness and demanding justice for Sabur Tyler. Your voice can change the course of his life and save an innocent man from an unjust death. Please sign this petition and share it widely to help bring light to this urgent issue. Let's stand together against the fatal flaw of wrongful execution.
