Save AmazonSmile! Tell Amazon that the AmazonSmile Program is essential to our communities
The Issue
Amazon has announced that they will be ending the AmazonSmile charity program next month. This is removing much-needed funding that nonprofits have relied on for a full decade. We understand that as a business they want to make the biggest impact in the community as possible but they are eliminating so many of the small nonprofits. OVER ONE MILLION nonprofits that are struggling to serve their community in the wake of covid are signed up with AmazonSmile. For many, this has been one of the more reliable sources of income as Amazon is an essential part of so many lives-- and with $449 MILLION dollars (as of writing this) donated since 2013, it's not hard to see why churches, schools, humanitarian efforts, disaster relief, animal rescues, childrens' efforts, mental health focused nonprofits, and so many more, have asked their supporters to participate in AmazonSmile. It's a beloved program that we don't want to lose!
For our small rescue, Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas, last year donations from AmazonSmile amounted to almost $2,500: that amount of money can provide full vetting* for 12 dachshunds in our care so they can find forever homes. That's 12 lives saved, in ONE organization, in one year, due to the AmazonSmile program. There are 648 animal organizations participating in Texas alone in the AmazonSmile program. The number of lives GLOBALLY depending on AmazonSmile in the animal nonprofit sector alone must be staggering. We can't speak for other sectors of nonprofits, but we are certain this change will be difficult to overcome for MANY in our sector and many lives will be lost without this program.
Ending AmazonSmile effects one million (by Amazon's own accounts) nonprofits all over the globe. Human lives and animal lives depend on this program and Amazon has announced their decision to end this program on February 20th, 2023. They announced their intention to focus on other avenues of chartiable giving, which while commendable, eliminates many of the small nonprofit sectors. Inclusiveness is so important in our world today and Amazon's new plan is extremely exclusive.
If you are one of the MANY people who choose to use AmazonSmile to help support small charities, we ask you to please sign our petition today and let Amazon know that their customers would like to continue helping individual small nonprofits. For many, this is the only way they CAN give, shopping through AmazonSmile for everyday essentials and knowing a small percent will help someone in need.

*Full vetting in this case refers to: veterinary checkup, vaccinations, spay or neuter, microchip registration, fecal testing and treatment for parasites, and heartworm test and prevention.
