The Issue

We are asking Algonquin College to reconsider the proposed suspension of the 'Design Foundations' program and recognize its importance as an essential stepping stool for creatives, entrepreneurs and upcoming professionals in the Design industry.

Algonquin College has recently announced heavy cuts to roughly 20 programs starting in Fall 2026.

Suspending the 'Design Foundations' program will only negatively impact students and the college as a whole. Many aspiring artists who are looking to nurture their talents into successful businesses will be left without a way to ready themselves for the design industry. This program has additionally propelled many students into long lasting and successful careers thanks to its extensive coverage of several pathways including Graphic Design, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Urban Design, and all sub categories.

Additionally, there are several programs (i.e. Graphic Design), that require portfolios for entry. The Design Foundations program is built with the intent of creating personally curated portfolios that help students get into more curated programs and help them network in the industry. Cutting this important base from students will only push creatives out of a critical market and send a message that up and coming artists and beginners are not welcome or considerable to take their creative skills to the next level.

By signing this petition, you are asking Algonquin College to reconsider this recommendation and to evaluate the Design Foundations program based on it's long-term value, continued relevance, and its heavy role in innovation and development for not just students; but for the rest of the city of Ottawa.
