The Issue

The current administration's proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill” poses a direct threat to Alaska’s last enduring wild places. This legislation represents a devastating giveaway of some of the most untouched lands in Alaska to oil and gas giants, putting these pristine regions at risk for irreversible damage.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska, and Alaska’s sensitive coastal waters are among the most ecologically vital and culturally sacred regions on Earth. They serve as sanctuaries for a myriad of species, flora and fauna, and provide a critical habitat that supports the rich biodiversity unique to Alaska.

This bill aims to fast-track drilling and extraction patterns in these vulnerable areas. Such activities will not only disrupt these delicate ecosystems but also significantly increase the rate at which glaciers are melting, arguably expediting the process tenfold. This is an assault on nature's balance and a disregard for the cultural and environmental legacy we should preserve for future generations.

Alaska’s wilderness is not a resource to be extracted. It’s a living, breathing system — the lungs of our planet, a home to countless species, and a sacred place for the Gwich’in and Iñupiat peoples.

The enactment of this legislation is a callous prioritization of short-term economic gain over the long-term health of our planet and its inhabitants. As we face the reality of climate change, it is more important than ever to safeguard our natural environments and uphold our responsibility as stewards of the earth.

We urgently call upon the Members of Congress, the Department of the Interior, and the American Public to halt the advance of this destructive bill. Every voice matters, and together, we can protect Alaska's wild lands from unnecessary exploitation and degradation.
