Save a Beaver - Save the Wetlands in Weaver Park

Save a Beaver - Save the Wetlands in Weaver Park
The Issue
Dear Neighbors,
Our beavers aren't just wildlife—they're natural protectors of our water and wetlands. The Leewood Metropolitan Recreation District (LMRD) is in the process to remove them without obtaining a community vote first. I started a petition because we deserve a real vote on this decision before it's too late. Sign and share if you think our neighbors should have a say.
This petition constitutes a formal request for due process, transparency, and community participation regarding the proposed and ongoing actions to remove beavers from community waterways, as outlined in the LRMD Beaver Management Plan.
Whereas:
The LRMD HOA has initiated or is proceeding with actions to remove beavers from community property without a formal, community-wide vote or dedicated hearing on this specific matter.
Beavers are widely recognized as a keystone species that contribute to water conservation, wetland creation, biodiversity, and natural fire mitigation—benefits particularly relevant in drought-prone regions such as Colorado.
The LRMD Beaver Management Plan (publicly available at: https://leawoodparks.colorado.gov/sites/leawoodparks/files/documents/Beaver%20Plan.pdf has not yet been formally presented in a timely advanced notice public hearing setting that allows for community questions, input, and deliberation.
Under Colorado law, including the Colorado Common Interest Ownership Act (CCIOA), members of a common interest community retain the right to call a special meeting upon obtaining signatures from at least twenty percent (20%) of the association membership;
Therefore, we hereby petition the LRMD HOA Board to:
Immediately pause any active or planned beaver removal actions until a formal community process is completed.
Schedule and publicly notice a formal HOA hearing dedicated specifically to beaver management, at which: The Beaver Management Plan is presented in full; knowing the risks of removal of the Beavers.
Residents are given the opportunity to ask questions and provide input.
Conduct a formal, community-wide vote following the hearing, allowing members in good standing to vote on the following question: YES: Retain and manage the beavers using responsible, science-based approaches
NO: Proceed with removal efforts and understanding the risks of relocating Beavers.
Ensure transparency and accessibility by providing clear communication to all residents regarding timelines, decisions, and voting procedures.
Statement of Good Faith.
This petition is submitted in the spirit of cooperation and community engagement. However, should a formal hearing not be scheduled within a reasonable timeframe, the undersigned reserve the right to organize and submit a petition meeting the statutory threshold required to call a special meeting under CCIOA.
Acknowledgment:
By signing this petition, each individual affirms their support for a formal hearing and community vote on beaver management within the LRMD HOA.
