The Kyle City Council has voted to destroy a 400-year-old oak tree on Old Stagecoach Rd, much to the horror & dismay of thousands of residents. We are a concerned group of local citizens trying to prevent this from happening. Join us!

The tree still stands. We named it The Porter Oak after writer Katherine Anne Porter who lived in Kyle in 1892. You can visit her childhood home downtown, which is now a literary center on the national register of historic places. We hope to get similar protections for The Porter Oak. The city officials & newspapers refer to it as “Jolene“ for some reason, but we have never heard anyone else call it that in real life.

We need more people to come join the efforts. Please add your name to our signup sheet below if you want to be a part of this movement. We are focusing on the AM hours when a work crew is most likely to arrive. We have also spoken with a nearby resident who has agreed to alert us if work crews show up when we are not there.

The destruction has been approved by council and may occur any day. We have spoken with multiple news outlets and hope there will continue to be an outpouring of support. So many people stopped by, asking questions, offering support, and bringing tacos and snacks!

Please continue to email the Kyle city council expressing your opinions.

The Decision Makers

Responded
The tree relocation or road redesign is being further reviewed to provide more information about the road project, lanes, detention, and width of the road. A full presentation on this and then a decision by all the council will be made public in the next few months about the relocation or redesign of the road. I would like to see the tree remain, but we must be prepared if in fact it has to be removed and whether it can survive once transplanted to a new location. I also care deeply about all trees and the environment and want to see the best solution for our city and community.
