Caroline Bromley started this petition to Savannah College of Art and Design

For those unaware, students will now be required to purchase a meal plan if we live on campus. For many of us, this is simply not feasible. I’ve created this petition for people like me, who do not have the option to move off campus at this point. My own situation is that I am a senior next year, and most leases on houses last for a year. So that extra cost combined with the loss from my scholarship would make moving out impossible.

To crunch some numbers: I pay a little under $300 for groceries for myself each quarter. This is compared to a $400+ meal plan which likely will not even feed me for the whole quarter.

And to address the “it’s to make the students healthier” line that they’re saying in order to justify this unjust change: I am a MARATHON RUNNER and eat very very healthy and still pay way less for my food. It’s not even difficult.  And I’m sure many other students are athletic like me and chose to live in a dorm with a kitchen BECAUSE we want to cook our own healthy meals that fit our specific nutritional needs.

For these reasons, and the reasons that I implore my fellow students to list with their signatures, this policy simply has to be changed.

We, the students, the artists, are what make this school what it is today. Maybe some of us have sources like parents that pay for all of our costs, but many of us do not and have to scrounge up whatever we have. And yet we’re still here, because we love art with so much passion that we’re willing to throw everything we have on the line to pursue it. For that reason I have to hope that our opinions mean something.
