La Fondation Armand-Vaillancourt et le RAAV lancent un appel urgent à la mobilisation face à un projet de réaménagement de l’Embarcadero Plaza à San Francisco, qui menace directement la Vaillancourt Fountain, œuvre emblématique du sculpteur québécois Armand Vaillancourt, réalisée entre 1967 et 1971.

Cette fontaine n’est pas qu’un monument de béton et d’eau : elle est un symbole vivant de l’audace artistique, un repère culturel pour les citoyens de San Francisco et un jalon majeur du patrimoine artistique mondial. Depuis plus de 50 ans, elle défie les normes, traverse les époques et fait rayonner la créativité québécoise à l’international.

Au-delà de sa valeur artistique et historique, la Vaillancourt Fountain est omniprésente dans l’imaginaire collectif de la ville : elle figure dans de nombreux guides touristiques, films, jeux vidéo et articles de presse, notamment dans le Time Magazine. Présentée dans l’Atlas de l'architecture brutaliste (Phaedon,2018) elle a été le théâtre de grands événements et spectacles marquants, renforçant son statut d’icône culturelle. Nourrissant les controverses, elle fait partie intégrante de l’histoire et de l’identité de San Francisco.

Détruire la Vaillancourt Fountain, c’est effacer un pan entier de l’histoire culturelle de la ville. C’est priver les générations futures d’une œuvre qui continue de provoquer, de rassembler et d’inspirer.

Aujourd’hui âgé de 95 ans, Armand Vaillancourt continue de créer avec une énergie militante inépuisable. Ne laissons pas son héritage sombrer sous les pelleteuses d’un urbanisme sans mémoire.

The Vaillancourt Fountain is under threat. A proposed redevelopment of Embarcadero Plaza puts this monumental work at risk of demolition.

Created between 1967 and 1971 by Canadian sculptor Armand Vaillancourt, the fountain is more than concrete and water. It is a bold expression of freedom, a landmark of modernist design, and a piece of San Francisco’s cultural identity. For over five decades, it has challenged aesthetics, sparked conversation, and reflected the rebellious spirit of this city.

Beyond its artistic and historical value, the fountain lives in the city’s collective memory. It has appeared in travel guides, films, video games, and even Time Magazine. Featured in The Atlas of Brutalist Architecture (Phaidon, 2018), it has been the stage for major public events and creative happenings — a true icon of civic space.

To demolish the Vaillancourt Fountain would be to erase part of what makes San Francisco unique. It would mean silencing a work that still provokes, gathers, and inspires.
