Sault City Council should address concerns about proposed ferrochrome smelter

To Sault Ste. Marie City Councillors:

Residents of Sault Ste. Marie and other stakeholders have many questions about the placement of a proposed ferrochrome smelter in our community.  We are asking you what consideration has been given to the following:

-How a ferrochrome smelter will affect air and water quality
-What negative impact it could have on tourism – one of Algoma’s biggest employers
-How it will impact human health (cancer rates, respiratory problems, etc)
-How it might negatively impact property values
-What concessions and incentives are being offered by the City to attract NorOnt (the proponent)
-How have Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, the Historic Sault Ste. Marie Métis Council, Bay Mills Indian Community, and the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians been consulted
-How the smelter might affect foods grown or harvested in the immediate area
-How Chippewa County and The City of Sault Sainte Marie in Michigan have been consulted
-Will a smelter be a deterrent to people and businesses wishing to relocate to the Sault
-What exactly is the nature of the jobs potentially being created and how many would go to our existing workforce
-How will a smelter affect our local energy security

We believe a thoughtful community dialogue, with meaningful opportunities for public input, is necessary before more resources are spent to attract a facility that may cause more harm than good.
