I have lived in Saugus my entire life and have always been involved in sports/clubs/etc. I was proud to be a Sachem until my sophomore year of high school. It was brought to my attention that our mascot isn’t right. It doesn’t honor Native Americans and is racist. Native Americans have brought mascots like the “sachem” to the attention of the public. We need change and this is the time to change our mascot. Everyone in this town is interested in keeping its history alive. I say we change our mascot to something that isn’t racist. The Saugus Ironworkers! The Ironworks is a national historic site here in our own town! We all have memories of visiting the Ironworks on field trips as kids. It is 2020 and Saugus needs to stop living in the past. We need to move forward and do the right thing. Changing the mascot is important and it’s time. You can still carry pride for your hometown without having a racist mascot. You can be proud you were apart of the change. If you don’t understand why having the sachem as a mascot is wrong, educate yourself. Be on the right side of history! You are from Saugus but you are not a Sachem.
