Satori Lost Her Sight Too Young at 4 years old— Help Prevent Blindness in Dogs
The Issue
"A simple eye pressure test could save a dog's vision. Let's make early glaucoma screening part of every annual veterinary checkup."
Satori is more than a dog—she is a beloved member of our family. At just 4 years old, our happy, energetic Jack Russell Terrier was diagnosed with glaucoma, a painful eye disease that can cause irreversible blindness in a matter of days.
We did everything responsible pet owners are told to do. Satori attended her regular veterinary checkups. Yet, like many dog owners, we were never informed about routine eye pressure testing that could help detect glaucoma before permanent damage occurs.
According to veterinary experts, glaucoma affects approximately 1 in every 60 dogs in North America and is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in dogs. Despite this, eye pressure screening is not routinely included in annual wellness exams.
By the time many dogs show symptoms such as red eyes, cloudiness, vision loss, or discomfort, it may already be too late to save their sight.
Glaucoma is not only blinding—it is extremely painful.
For families like ours, the diagnosis brings both emotional and financial hardship. Emergency testing, specialist consultations, lifelong medications, and surgeries can cost thousands of dollars. Some families are forced to choose between financial stability and the care their beloved pet desperately needs.
We believe this must change.
We are calling for:
Routine eye pressure screening during annual veterinary examinations.
Greater awareness and education about canine glaucoma.
Earlier screening for dogs at increased risk.
More affordable access to veterinary ophthalmology care and treatment.
Improved pet insurance coverage for preventative eye care and glaucoma treatment.
Satori's story is not unique. Every year, thousands of dogs and their families face the devastating reality of preventable vision loss.
A simple screening could mean the difference between sight and blindness.
Please sign this petition and help protect dogs across Canada from unnecessary suffering. Together, we can raise awareness, promote early detection, and give more dogs the chance to live healthy, pain-free lives with the gift of sight.
For Satori. For every dog at risk. For every family who loves them. ❤️🐾
