Unban Discord at Singapore American School
The Issue
Discord is an American VoIP, instant messaging, and digital distribution platform designed for creating communities. Users communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media, and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers."
Discord is used by students and teachers for chatting and communication. Banning discord does not prevent students from communicating during class since WhatsApp, Google Chat, Hangouts, Zoom, iMessage, and other chatting apps are not blocked. However, preventing students from using discord hinders communication from those that use it, causing an inconvenience for the many students that use Discord on a daily basis.
Currently these clubs use Discord as a primary medium of communication: Engineering Club, Design Club, Digital Frontiers Club, Quiz Club, CS Honors Society, Chess Club, Math Club, Aviation Club and more.
In short, blocking discord does not discourage communication amongst students, but rather makes existing communication methods much more difficult, forcing students to make a workaround.
Students of SAS request that this crucial networking platform be unblocked.
