Help save the Sea Silk Museum of Montegranatico and the lifelong work of the last Master of Sea Silk, Chiara Vigo!
Chiara Vigo, lifelong resident of Sulcis, Sardegna, is the last living Master harvester and weaver in the world of Byssus “Sea Silk”. This rare and ancient traditional knowledge, which Chiara Vigo’s family has preserved and passed down for 30 generations, Chiara maintains and shares with the world, non profit, through her work at the Sea Silk Museum of Montegranatico in a building made available to her by the city of Sant’Antioco. Admission to this precious reserve of priceless world heritage has always been free of charge and therefore open to everyone.
Her works in Byssus Sea Silk, which are in every sense of the word priceless, as Byssus by sacred tradition can neither be sold or bought, are found and displayed in many museums and universities who know and appreciate the immense value of Chiara Vigo’s ancient art. Sadly, in a universe dominated almost entirely by the market and by the iron laws of economics, this feature makes Chiara Vigo a stranger in her own territory and in some sense an exile in her own village community.
Due to the secular oath that binds the women of her family not to sell the works that they have created in Byssus Sea Silk, Chiara Vigo does not market her art and has therefore always lived in conditions of hardship and destitution.
In order for her to carry on her commitment to future generations with dignity, Chiara Vigo deserves not only to be able to have a permanent space at no charge at Montegranatico Sant'Antioco, but also to be among the beneficiaries of the Bacchelli Law.
On the premise that in 2005 the town of Sant'Antioco (Carbonia / Iglesias) had given to Chiara Vigo the free loan of the municipal property of Montegranatico, she transformed this property into the Museum of Byssus, which attracts scholars, researchers, tourists and students from all over the world. Incredibly on December 23, 2015 the municipality issued an order of immediate eviction due to "alleged structural and electrical system safety reasons".
The Museum of Byssus Sea Silk, which is not only the cultural pride of Sardegna and Italy but also a unique and precious World Heritage resource that to date has received over 500,000 visitors from all over the planet, must not be closed!
