In 2017 I was raped by Andrew (Drew) Vanderhorn. Drew was a close friend of mine at the time. We used to drink, listen to blues music, and talk about our struggles in life. The night I was raped I went to Drew’s house in need of a friend and company, as I was extremely suicidal and could not be alone. Drew knew I was struggling with self harm and suicidal ideation. That night I became extremely intoxicated and attempted to commit suicide by cutting my wrist. Luckily, I was too intoxicated to stand, let alone do any serious bodily damage to myself. I did however pass out from presumably blood loss, shock, and from the large amount of alcohol I had consumed. When I came to, the next thing I remember was being held down by Drew and being raped by him on the same bed that had bloodstains from my self inflicted wounds. I remember asking him to stop, and him apologizing but not stopping. He proceeded to continue raping me while I struggled to have the strength to move. The next morning I was covered in bruises, mostly on my breasts and chest. I never went to the hospital to get a rape kit or exam because of the fear that I would be hospitalized for being suicidal. It took me 2 years to report the rape to the Saratoga Springs Police Department. That was over a year ago, and still Drew is a free man who has never been arrested. For a long time I had tried to convince myself that maybe it was a misunderstanding or and isolated incident, and that maybe he was a good person who was struggling emotionally just as I was at the time. But after being denied an arrest by the police and district attorney, I decided to do some research on Drew. I found many ex partners of his, the majority who have said they were also raped or assaulted by Drew. Some of these women were incredibly strong and decided to speak with the police after I reached out to them to let them know of the ongoing investigation. Even after this, Drew has not been arrested. This is a problem larger than I can handle. More women keep coming out of the woodworks and telling me their stories about Drew hurting them as well. I know now that my case was not an isolated incident. I believe Drew is a serial rapist. I believe that in order to keep the women of Saratoga Springs safe, he needs to see justice served. I will not go into details on the specifics of what evidence we have, but I promise you, there is more evidence than most other 3 year old cases have. I believe if Drew is arrested, even more women will find the strength to come forward and speak up about their experiences with him as well. I cannot keep devoting all of my time to finding them. I’ve done my part, and I’m asking for the Saratoga Springs Police Department to do the same.
