Dogs on chains, tethers, attached to collars, their world is as wide as the chain is long. They sleep, eat, defecate, and watch what they can of the world from the end of a chain. In the heat of summer, the cold of winter, and the long dark nights, they live on that chain with no exercise, social interaction, love...... sometimes without food and water.

Dogs on chains can become frustrated, fearful, and territorial. This becomes a danger to small unsupervised children, other pets, neighborhood animals. Dog bites and deaths have occurred as a result of dogs living on chains.

Dogs on chains deserve a second-chance, a chance to be free of that bondage and live happy, social lives as a part of their human family. Please sign this petition and help to inform our elected officials that Santa Fe County, NM, wants to un-chain their dogs!

In August 2013 Bernalillo County revised animal care ordinance to establish ZERO TOLERANCE for dog chaining or tethering a dog.

Our UNCHAIN Santa Fe County program will look to provide support for getting dogs off of chains and helping to build and establish defined humane fenced enclosures for these dogs.
