Important Today 8/6/23 from 3-5pm sign the petition at 719 Fairmount Ave., Santa Cruz, next to John Franks Park. Spread the Word. The city of Santa Cruz is zoning for 8364 units. The state is asking for 3737 units over the next few years. We do not need 4628 more units than the state requires. (Most units will have 2 people in them which means 9256 more people.) Who currently lives in Santa Cruz would want to spend the $3,685 for 638 sq ft as 555 Pacific currently rents for? The new units are not likely for Santa Cruz residents due to the cost of the market rate units.)
This is an important initiative to sign that The Housing for People group has put together to help Santa Cruz from having a large increase of very tall 12-story buildings. Here is what the initiative is requesting:
The Housing For People initiative will:
1.) Increase the affordable housing ratio to 25% in the City of Santa Cruz, as the City Planning Commission recommended. Increase available low-income housing, so family members, low and moderate-wage earners, youth, and elders can continue to live here. This initiative will increase affordable housing by 25% in all new development with over 30 units.
2.) Take back the resident's right to vote on the city design. We value thoughtful, environmentally-sensitive city design. If a developer wants to exceed the community-created height and density limits, it would need a vote of the people.
