- · Come to Lot 4 parking lot where the Farmer's Market is located to express your concern about the 12 large heritage trees being cut down rather than a redesign around the trees.
- · The multi-use garage/housing/library project designed for Lot 4 (farmers market) is still in the phase of securing permits. One of those permits is for cutting down all 12 trees on t lot 4, 9 of these trees are heritage trees (at least 14" in diameter at 54" above ground).
- · Ask that the Santa Cruz City Council ask the architects to incorporate at least some of the trees into the project design, as the City's Heritage Tree Resolution requires.
- Large old trees are important elements of many ecosystems and have a multitude of functions, both ecological (per research Lindenmayer et al. 2013) Large trees reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, by taking carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in its wood in a process called "carbon sequestration", and this prevents climate change. Trees also reduce pollution and global warming, because they are the lungs of the planet. Trees contribute to biodiversity
- Your help is needed to get messages to the City Council that the Heritage trees on Lot 4 are precious to many people for many reasons, and we want as many preserved as possible.
- · Your help is needed to write the Santa Cruz city council and ask that they intervene. The trees are important for the betterment of the town of Santa Cruz. People come to Santa Cruz because of its beauty. We need the trees in Santa Cruz to keep our town beautiful and to keep our tourism and beauty.·
