Here to address some important info, comments, and questions I received about the petition. Many are not as largely informed on the company which is fine so here is a brief history: Sanrio is the 60 year old company that created and owns Hello Kitty! Hello Kitty (if you look it up) is technicaly classified as Human by Sanrio. Sanrio decided to make Hello Kitty British because at the time of her creation foreign countries, in particular, Britain, were trendy in Japan. Sanrio already had several characters set in the US, and it wanted Hello Kitty to be different. She got the name Kitty from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass; during a scene early in the book, Alice plays with a cat she calls Kitty. Sanrio's motto is "social communication," and the creator Papa Tsuji wanted the brand name to reflect that. He first considered "Hi Kitty" before settling on "Hello" for the greeting. Out of the 400+ Sanrio Characters technically human characters there are NONE with non-white skin. This goes back to the Euro-centric beauty standard that has veiled our society for ages and needs to change NOW! Join me and the many BIPOC people that have supported Sanrio/Hello Kitty over the years in requesting the creation of the FIRST BIPOC Sanrio Character -with some COLOR / cultural representation and/or an inclusive line of Hello Kitty - their most iconic character. The power of Hello Kitty to be used toward ending colorism and racism would make quite the statement, With a company motto of “social communication” they should live up to it and communicate about this important social issue.
