Every month, millions of girls and women across South Africa experience their menstrual cycles, a natural and unavoidable part of life. Yet, alarmingly, for many individuals, accessing sanitary products remains a financial challenge. While countless health and well-being initiatives exist, the accessibility of essential hygienic products for menstruation is often overlooked.

Currently, South Africa has programmes that provide free condoms as part of public-health initiatives to reduce HIV transmission and prevent unintended pregnancies. These initiatives highlight the government’s ability to respond with urgency to public health needs. However, the question arises: why can't the same dedication be exhibited in addressing the issue of menstrual equity?

Period poverty should not be a barrier to education or an affront to personal dignity. It's a stark reality that many young girls miss school days due to the lack of sanitary products, affecting their academic performance and self-esteem. Statistics from data-driven policy research underscore that around one in ten girls in Africa miss up to 20% of school days in a year due to lack of menstrual hygiene products. In South Africa, these statistics are more than numbers—they represent girls whose educational potential is curtailed.

Providing free sanitary products in schools, public restrooms, and community centres can pave the way towards equality and empowerment. A small investment in these essential products can ensure that no girl or woman has to compromise her education or her health.

This petition is deeply personal to me because I have witnessed firsthand the distress and difficulty faced by young girls who cannot afford these basic necessities. It is heart-wrenching to see bright futures dimmed by something preventable.
