A picture is worth a thousand words. Public access to the land in the photo is what we must protect.
Nearly 10,000 acres of the Sandia Mountains is being considered for transfer out of U.S. Forest Service ownership. This is Wilderness, public land and a place generations of New Mexicans have been able to access and enjoy. Congresswomen Melanie Stansbury is being asked by the Sandia Pueblo to introduce legislation to transfer this public land directly into trust for the Pueblo.
We have 1,386 petition signatures, but that is not enough signatures to show our decision makers how strongly this community cares about protecting the public’s rights to this public lands.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Please share the petition with as many person in your circle. Send it to friends, neighbors, coworkers, hiking partners, climbing partners, neighborhood groups and anyone you think cares about the Sandias or is willing to add their signature.
The biggest challenge right now is simply getting people’s attention before decisions are made.
This mountain matters too much to our Albuquerque community to stay quiet.

THIS LAND IS NOT EMPTY
This land is not empty and that's the fundamental thing to understand. A change in ownership or a change to the current legal protections would deeply impact many communities throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including recreation and dispersed recreation users, enclave neighborhoods, tourism, the outdoor recreation economy, and the employers and workers who choose to build their lives here because of our access to the Sandias and public lands. The mountains are part of what attracts people to Albuquerque and keeps them here.
We can recognize the area’s deep cultural significance to Sandia Pueblo, while also protecting the public’s existing access rights. These interests are not mutually exclusive and it's what is already in place.
