Keep Coach Riley at SMHS

The purpose of this petition is to bring awareness to the situation surrounding the termination of Coach Ed Riley, as well as a call to the District Board that we, the undersigned, wish to see Riley reinstated to his position as head coach of both Cross-Country and Track & Field at San Mateo High School.

As of 11/19/15, Ed Riley's position of head coach of both Cross-Country and Track & Field at San Mateo High School has been "opened for application" due to the lack of team representation at PALs (individual performances were phenomenal).

Between the two teams, there have been dozens of CCS competitors and at least 4 individual CCS titles, let alone individual and team PAL titles, in the past 10 years alone. This rivals the accomplishments of all the other athletic teams at San Mateo combined during that same time period. It seems foolish to judge the teams based on PAL representation, rather than the quality of performance, which has been nothing but stellar under the guidance of Head Coach Ed Riley. PAL representation is nothing but bragging rights for the Admin.

To many, Ed Riley has been more than just a coach. His friendly and inviting demeanor has been shown time and time again. In only a few years, the Annual Bearcat Invitational has become a enormous success, with teams from as far as Nevada and Hawaii raving about the quality and organization of the meet, as well as the abilities of Coach Ed Riley. How do we know? They all come back the following year. The Invitational last year, led solely by volunteers, also raised over $10,000 for the track program, none of which would be possible without his tireless effort and numerous connections across the country.

He builds impactful bonds with his athletes, proven by the numerous alumni that come back to visit and help coach year in and year out. In fact, two of his former athletes now hold Assistant Coach positions for the Track & Field team at SMHS.

His position has been opened in hopes that the Admin can find a more qualified person for the position. We know there isn't. Let the world know what we know.

I think I speak for everyone when I say Coach Riley is more than a coach. He is a friend. He has always been there for us, and it’s our turn to be there for him.

Bring Coach Riley back.
