Homeless Housing Hotels on the Coast

Homeless Housing Hotels on the Coast
The Issue
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is proposing the purchase of one local hotel on Hwy 1 -- the Coastside Inn (originally the proposal was to also include the purchase of the Quality Inn) -- to use as transitional homeless housing. We believe this investment by the County does not address the systemic issue of homeless in our county, leaves homeless in a place where there are no local services or resources readily available to them, and will negatively impact the nearby neighborhoods by driving property value down and putting many businesses at risk. The Board is planning this hurried purchase of these hotels as they have received emergency funds from the Cares Act, and if they do not use the funds before the end of the year, they will lose them. We request the County allot those funds to some other qualified use. The proposed purchase should go through a proper review and evaluation and not be made as a rash decision, as it will have a lasting impact on our community.
