The Issue

Your signature sends a strong message to our local representatives that-
I'm a San Marcos, TX resident and I want you to pass the necessary ordinances, fund staff, and stand up for the 71% of our community that rents!

We're petitioning the San Marcos, TX City Council to direct Staff and resources to enact a Tenant's Bill of Rights (TBoR) at the local level.

A Tenant's Bill of Rights means:
1. The Application Process should be fair
2. The Lease should be fair
3. Tenants have a right to privacy and should not fear retaliation for reporting issues
4. Tenant’s have a right to a habitable home with a practical means to address grievances
5. Reasonable Rent and Costs adjustments with notification
6. Right to Organize
7. Safeguards against improper Evictions

We've been using the research provided by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC.org) as the basis for our requests. We have also already gotten City Council to add this to their "Strategic Initiatives", which is a BIG WIN!

Now we need you!
It's gonna be important to have community members engaged in these discussions and negotiations - sharing your stories, your expertise, and your energy to help us pass something meaningful!

We're asking SMTX residents to sign today, and stay engaged with the process. Whether you've got time to block walk, share this with your social network, join us at our monthly meeting, or speak at City Council meetings - every bit of action will help.
