San Luis Obispo County has strong facilities for nearly every major U.S. sport — football, soccer, baseball, and basketball — yet ice sports remain completely absent from the Central Coast.

This petition was originally created to demonstrate community interest in bringing a year-round indoor ice rink to San Luis Obispo County. Since then, the project has made real and measurable progress.

A nonprofit organization — San Luis Obispo Community Ice Rink — has been formed to move this effort forward. A feasibility study conducted with Cal Poly supports strong demand and long-term viability. Multiple appropriately zoned sites have been evaluated, and the concept has been formally presented to local leadership. The consistent feedback has been clear: continued community support is essential to unlock the next phase.

While California is known for sunshine, the success of ice rinks across the state shows that well-planned facilities thrive here. Locally, San Luis Obispo already has a strong roller hockey community — but players, families, and coaches agree that ice hockey, figure skating, and learn-to-skate programs require real ice to reach their full potential.

Currently, the nearest ice arena is in Goleta — too far for regular practices, leagues, and youth participation. As a result, Central Coast families miss out on opportunities that are standard in many comparable communities.

What This Facility Would Provide 🏒⛸️
Youth and adult ice hockey
Figure skating and speed skating
Learn-to-skate and family skating programs
Public skating and community events
When the ice is not in use, the building could also function as a concert, convention, and community event venue, maximizing year-round use and economic impact.
