Exactly one month to the day after SJUSD received my initial letter they replied without addressing the concerns raised. My response to SJUSD’s non-response dated May 13, 2022 is below. Meanwhile, I was contacted by a parent with students at Trace/Hoover/Lincoln with similar concerns and this parent is gathering supporters to come speak for 1 minute each during public comment at the SJUSD School Board meeting THIS THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2022 at 6PM. Please come share your concerns in person at the meeting - unfettered access to social and entertainment media during class creates an environment not conducive to student learning and achievement. Excessive screen time can cause setbacks in children’s health, social and emotional development.
"I received your communication titled “RESPONSE TO COMMUNICATION DATED MARCH 29, 2022”, dated April 29, 2022. In your communication, you failed to substantively address any of the issues I had raised and claimed that my complaint did not allege any policy violations, but rather requested a change in current policy. Your understanding is incorrect. Nowhere in my complaint did I ask the District to change current policy. Instead, other concerned parents and I spent a lot of time reviewing current SJUSD policies and described in detail why the District’s current actions are in violation of its own policies (BP 0450, BP 5131, and BP 5144, to be precise). I cited the applicable policies and explained why violations have occurred.Your response to my complaint has not adequately addressed any of the concerns raised, and generally brushed off the issues raised by trying to refer to a formal mistake, which was not made.
We expect a response that sincerely addresses the concerns raised. If this is not something you are willing to do, then please advise on the next steps to escalate this matter further."
