Preserve the Safety of Students at SJSU
The Issue
As many have seen in the news, recent events have been causing concern and fear amongst the students of San Jose State University. It began with the discovery of a student who was in possession of a loaded semi automatic handgun with ammunition as well as a hand knife. Although he has been detained, he was only suspended despite making threats on social media to fire shots on SJSU campus. The following day there were shots fired into the active Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library. Just recently, the University Police Department of SJSU emailed students about a suspect that may have been connected to the shooting. In short, there could be active shooters walking freely near/on campus. It is a fact that there is currently an average of more than one mass shooting a day. With these odds, and after witnessing these events, my peers and I are more than just concerned. While an investigation is currently underway, we respectfully request the President of San Jose State University, Mary Papazian, to issue a pause on classes for the next few days for the safety of everyone on campus. We understand that incidents may, and do happen regardless, but that does not mean we should ignore possible signs and desensitize ourselves to a potential danger. Mass shootings are a serious concern, and it is vital that we take action for the safety of our students and staff. Right now we have the ability to stop a possible tragedy, but we must take action.
