Since we last emailed you, we formed an open committee of community advocates to move the needle on our effort to name a San Jose street after President Obama. With four roads in San Jose with "Almaden" in the name, our Committee chose Almaden Boulevard in Downtown San Jose as our initially preferred street to rename ... "President Barack Obama Boulevard."
Our Committee also learned we need to pay nearly $8,000 to file the application to the City of San Jose for a street renaming. As such, we need a way to raise the money.*
We're very fortunate that the African American Community Service Agency in San Jose is sponsoring our effort by creating a special "Barack Obama Blvd." fund for this cause.
To donate to President Barack Obama Boulevard, and for more information about the City's process, go to: http://www.sjaacsa.com/donate/.
Thanks for your continued support; with your donation, YES WE CAN get a street in San Jose named for President Barack Obama!
Yours in community change,
Alex Shoor
*Instead of raising the money through one of our personal bank accounts (which could be ethically dicey) or creating a new entity to handle the funds (which could take really long), we decided to partner with an existing nonprofit organization to "fiscally sponsor" our effort.
As I understand it, a key part of fiscal sponsorship is that a nonprofit creates a separate account dedicated exclusively to a different issue or entity in exchange for a small percentage (say 4-9%) of the money raised to recover some of the expenses of managing the additional account/entity.
