Why this petition matters

A Mission Local blog post by Laura Wenus entitled, McCoppin Hub Will Be Fenced to Keep Out Homeless informs us of plans to restrict access to what is now the community, public use plaza at McCoppin and Valencia Streets in San Francisco.

The City plans to erect an 8-foot high fence around the tiny cul-de-sac with gates that will remain locked unless an official event is in progress. There are rarely any hosted events at the plaza.

Why are they now choosing to close off a space only recently designed and built as a welcoming, public access, community gathering area? The answer: To keep out the homeless!

Installing this fence will not only keep the homeless out, it will keep all the rest of us locked outside too! A "Community Steward" might be given keys to unlock the plaza for official events, but it will mostly remain closed. Or, if food trucks are given access, it might become a place you have to pay to have access to.

Locked, we can't use it. Pay-Per-View, we have limited access. Who wins here? The food trucks!

And where do the homeless go off to? The sidewalk's off limits because of the Sit/Lie Law. Should they go sit in the middle of traffic? That might be a quick solution to the ever enlarging homelessness problem we struggle with.

SIGN THIS PETITION & STAND AGAINST THE CRIMINALIZATION OF HOMELESSNESS & THE DEHUMANIZING OF THE HOMELESS.

(And consider taking further action! If the homeless fence is erected, I vow to erect a tent on the sidewalk in front, by the entrance. Join with me in a LIVE-IN for the Destigmatization of the Marginally Housed and Homeless! Let's Erect a Tent City! Shoot, the McCoppin Hub will become the Homeless--&-Allies--Hub!
