Students and Balboa High Community started this petition to San Francisco School District Board of Education

Balboa High School is named after Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a Spanish conquistador. He helped to establish the first settlement on the South American continent, at Darién, on the coast of the Isthmus of Panama. In 1513, while on the search for gold, he sighted the Pacific Ocean and claimed it, and all of its shores for Spain. In 1511, Balboa became the interim governor of Darién. Under his authority, the natives of the region were dealt harshly by the Spaniards in order to exploit them for gold and other riches.

Students of Balboa High School would not like to be associated with a man who conquered and dealt harshly with the Native people of the areas. This is why we are asking for your help! It is time for change and we wish to make that come true! With this petition, we hope to change the name of our school to one more appropriate and respectable.

Although Balboa was a conquistador with smaller impacts, he still played a significant role in the genocide of both their Native peoples and cultures. Countless groups of Native people encountered slavery, and other inhumane behaviors at the hands of Balboa and his fellow Spaniards. As students in such a diverse school, community, and city, we believe that this history does not represent who we are and what we stand for. We further believe that we should not in any way be glorifying and celebrating his actions by keeping him on as our school namesake.
