Support a road diet on San Jose Ave.

The Issue

The "Bernal Cut" section of San Jose Avenue is a throwback to the time when the Mission Freeway was nearly built. We can thank the people who stopped that monstrosity from tearing the Mission neighborhoods apart during the early nineteen sixties. Unfortunately,  they were too late to stop the de facto freeway that is the "Bernal Cut" from slicing through Glen Park, Bernal Heights, College Hill, and La Lengua.

Its time for us to finish the job! The road diet and traffic calming that is being tested now by the MTA with the guidance of Supervisor Wiener is the result of decades of community organizing around making the Bernal Cut safer for everyone.

The current measures are not yet complete but even now we are seeing some success. AM peak hour bicycle volumes increased tremendously by 651%! Once the exit from Highway 280 is reduced to one lane it is hoped that fewer cars will use our neighborhood as a high speed cut-through and will stay on the freeway where they belong.

The undersigned urge you to stay the course. We support your efforts to humanize San Jose Avenue and eventually turn it into a safer street that serves the families of our neighborhoods.
